Barrick Gold

Thinc’s Resources team – in partnership with Energetics (a consultancy firm with expertise in climate change) – has been engaged by Barrick Australia Pacific to manage the assessment of energy usage at six of its gold mines, located in Western Australia, New South Wales, and Papua New Guinea. In collaboration with Energetics, our team developed the Energy Mass Balance (EMB) tool. It allows Barrick to quantify the flow of energy through a site or process to determine the amount of energy used by individual items of equipment and individual processes or sub-processes. The tool then identifies opportunities for energy savings that require further analysis by a site Energy Committee. Thinc’s Resources team manages the compilation of energy data from each site, liaison with site staff and the logistics of travel to remote mining camps. Additionally, our team prepares a final presentation to the mine site with the energy efficiency opportunities identified in the first run of the EMB Tool. Our team also has the expertise to make recommendations as to how site staff might be organised to ensure the monthly data is compiled, the EMB Tool utilised and to establish an Energy Committee. Its role is to review the opportunities identified by the EMB tool and make recommendations to senior leadership about which areas in mining, processing or general administration and camp operations could be changed to save energy.
