Omar De Silva
Thinc Beyond
Omar joined Thinc in May 2011 as a part time consultant, before taking on more responsibilities in a full time role. He has worked on projects for clients ranging from the Department of Business and Innovation, to the Laundry Association of Victoria through to the Charles Darwin University in Darwin.
I saw Thinc as a place that would provide me with a great opportunity to apply the skills I have learnt with a group of people that I felt would bring the best out in me. I've been able to apply my degree to inform the workshops we run and advice we provide. I thoroughly enjoy the challenge of balancing feasibility with innovation. Trying to bring the best out of supporting teams and team-members is highly rewarding, as is challenging leaders of the organisations we work with to step outside of their comfort zones. The best part of my job is working with these senior decision makers of large Australian and multi-national organisations. Thinc is a great place to work, not only for the diverse range of people you work with, but also the diverse range of projects you work on. The opportunities I have been provided with as a result of working for Thinc have been first class, and I doubt the same opportunities would be available for me within other organisations.
Sally Falls
Thinc Health
Now a Senior Consultant within Thinc Health, Sally made the switch to project management after working as a Structural Engineer in the UK and Australia designing rail assets, retail and commercial buildings. Sally joined Thinc in 2007 as a consultant in the Brisbane office and is now based in Perth as a Senior Project Manager for Thinc Health.
Although engineering has given me many great opportunities, including several years working overseas, I felt that it wasn't the right fit for me. I wanted to be more involved in other aspects the projects I was working on and develop my management and communications skills. I felt that taking a job in project management would be the best way to facilitate this. My favourite project to date has been the New Children's Hospital in Perth. I have been involved in this project since the early procurement phases, and have worked as part of both the State's commercial and construction teams. Delivering a world-class hospital facility for sick children has a big feel-good factor attached. I have enjoyed watching the building develop and the interesting and complex challenges which arise during the construction phase of a project. There have been many memorable moments for me at Thinc including winning all three prizes in the Christmas sweep one year in Brisbane, abseiling down the WACA lights in Perth to raise money for the PMH Foundation, and I have to add dealing with the minutiae on a daily basis with the ENERGEX project team. If you are willing to work hard, and be flexible, then you may just get sent to Perth to work on a $1.2B project!
Tomas Keeler
Thinc Projects
After being exposed to Thinc Projects during his first job out of university, and gaining an understanding of the services offered by Thinc, Tomas decided to pursue a career with the company. He has worked for Thinc for six years and is now a Senior Consultant based in Sydney, after three years based in Darwin.
A degree in Civil Engineering and my background in construction have given me an understanding of building processes which I have been able to use in a Project Management setting. I understand the problems and issues faced by builders on projects and the implications associated with the resolution of those issues. Being a Project Manager can be stressful. Sometimes the decisions you make for the good of the project may not be for the good of all stakeholders involved. I think that one of the main things that I have learned is to treat everyone with respect from the client all the way down to the subcontractor. The thing I enjoy most about the work is that because you are always moving through the project lifecycle, you rarely get bogged down in one repetitive aspect for too long. The best thing about working with Thinc is the relatively flat management structure. Directors of the company have always been approachable and office politics doesn't play a part in the day to day operation. If I had to describe Thinc to anyone, I would say it is an open, friendly atmosphere, with a calm yet intensive working environment. And I can't forget the great people I get to work with every day.
